Christina Dennis, lifestyle blogger and lover of all things do-it-yourself, has been inspiring DIY creations ever since launching her blog in 2009. Her blog, thediymommy.com, began as a way for Christina to share some of the projects she had made for her baby daughter, but quickly took on a life of its own.
Christina says, “I started the blog when my eldest daughter was six months old. It was a way I could show off some of the things I was making for her – like baby clothes, baby toys and other creations – and share how my readers could make them themselves.”
“Slowly, the blog morphed into something a lot more. I started writing about how to make things for home, my favourite recipes and even mom fashion and beauty tips. After we documented the process of building our home in 2013, the blog became my full-time job!”
With the blog’s runaway success – over 14,000 followers on Instagram, a mention in Good Housekeeping and being selected in 2015 as “Western Canada’s Next Home Stylist” by Western Living – it is no surprise she was asked to speak at the Edmonton Home and Garden show about 2016 spring trends.
“Don’t want to go so bold? One large floral pillow in a room is all you need to add a little burst of spring!”
While she discussed many spring trends, including whites, mixed metals and Scandinavian-inspired minimalism, she clearly had a runaway favourite. “Florals,” she gushed. “I’m head over heels. I’ve always loved florals and I think there are so many ways to showcase them in home decor. If you love them, too, floral statement drapes or wallpaper are both gorgeous ways to include these styles. Don’t want to go so bold? One large floral pillow in a room is all you need to add a little burst of spring!”
Her love of floral patterns was evident in the show’s main stage decor, which Christina designed herself. Incorporating furniture from The Brick, she was able to showcase two very different looks: Modern Minimalist and Vintage Chic. She also included nods to some of this spring’s hottest trends and her unique DIY projects. Now that’s talent!
For those who would like to incorporate either of these looks into their decor, Christina shares that it’s all about doing what you love. Some of the style elements she included were clean lines and chrome accents, keeping the modern room simple. To add a touch of romance, the vintage room was all about pastels and floral patterns. She also pointed out during her presentation that The Brick’s furniture is a great option because it’s budget friendly and good quality.
In her own home, Christina’s favourite piece of Brick furniture is a pair of living room sofas. “The Davina sofas have a really stylish shape. The leather is beautiful and looks stunning, but they’re also really comfortable for our family to kick back on. I’ve always wanted a pair of matching sofas for this room, and I’m so happy with these ones!”
Of course, if budget friendly is the mantra you echo when styling your home, DIY projects are an excellent option. The DIY expert knows doing things on your own can sometimes be daunting, but she had this advice to offer: “I say just go for it. I think a lot of people are so worried that they’ll fail at a project that they don’t even want to start. I’ve had dozens and dozens of DIY mishaps, but the worst case scenario has been that I waste a few materials but I learn a whole lot. Just give it a shot – you might be surprised with yourself!”

Some of the DIY projects showcased on the main stage included no-sew decorative pillows, fabric covered books and realistic, faux-floral arrangements. Simple and affordable, each of these pieces brought the space to life with plenty of charm. For those who are so inclined, these and many other DIY projects are available on Christina’s blog along with easy-to-follow instructions.
If you choose to give DIY a try, not only should you consider this expert’s advice but perhaps her inspiration, as well. Christina has many places she looks to that spark ideas for new and exciting projects.
“I love to browse through magazines like Style at Home, Country Living, and Better Homes and Gardens for home decor trends and decor ideas. I also like to keep a close eye on my favourite bloggers to see what they’re up to.”
